How do you afford to pay gas prices at the pump?

Lorraine D asked:

Gas prices keep rising and many folks are making sacrafices, or changing life styles to pay for gasoline. What has been your best idea, to afford your gas costs for your vehicle.
What works for you?

Stop wasting money on other stuff.

I don’t eat out, I don’t buy junk food, I buy my books from the thrift store.

Since I drive a tow truck, I had no choice but to raise my rates around 20%.

every time i make a trip i add gas this way it never gets too low ,most people wait until their almost empty or never just add to what they have, ever trip i make a stop and add 5 bucks worth,so this way i never get too low, that works best for me,it took some getting use to though sometimes i will still forget to stop and put some in,but if you can get in good habit of doing this it sure will help, you,ll never be at the pump filling up,and it cost the same either way,its just cheaper to do it a little each time you drive it,good luck with it.

I simply SLOW DOWN!!!….I have said it over and over again…..if you slow down just ten miles an hour you will improve your fuel mileage greatly…..it takes twice as much fuel to accelerate from 65 to 75 than it does to accelerate from 0 to 65……also the lower speed takes a lot less fuel to maintain your speed…….so do us all a favor and slow down to save the enviroment, money, and possibly a life!!!!

look at overall lifestyle and see if you can make any money saving changes. buy second hand books etc cut down on type or amount of holidays. biggest saver is to change the type of vehicle IE smaller engine maybe a diesel? and a smaller car as weight costs fuel despite any engine size.
Another big factor is to cut down on unnecessary trips in the vehicle and to change our driving styles to save gas. IE look ahead anticipate so you do not have heavy acceleration or hard braking. not easy but we are all having to pay more for fuel and it will get worse. Have you considered car sharing? we just went away for the weekend with friends we shared a car ( never used to ) also we found many others now shared a car and thus fuel costs. Also do keep the vehicle in a good state of repair , a well tuned and serviced engine is at its most economical.

You sound American. You lucky person – how about us Brits having to pay around £1.15 ($2) per litre for fuel? That’s got to be $9 a gallon.
We have a quaint old saying that says “You don’t know how lucky you are”.
Drive a small diesel – that’s what I do. (50 miles per gallon).
