How high do gas prices need to get before people do something?

The Big Aristotle asked:

I realize that we have our hands tied somewhat, since most people need gas in order to drive to work, store, etc, but there must be SOMETHING people can do to put pressure on the states to cap oil prices. By continuing to buy at these hiked prices, we’re sending the message that we’re ok with paying these prices…..but we’re not! What do you suppose should be done? I was thinking we could start riots at all our local gas stations…but i dont know if that would work

I have asked the very same question myself. Riots are not an effective way to promote your frustration. I would suggest that you write your congressman (loally and federally). You could also start an email and circulate it as a petition to get mor people involved. I would sign it. You could be a hero!!

The test is to see how high they would have to go to up crime levels, how well re-instating car-pooling would go, and to what end people have to be pushed individually before they begin acting as a majority whole.

We get tested like this every year with something, whether it be gas, or food, or shelter costs, even how these actions up religious numbers–What sparks the survival instinct???…It also encompasses reaction to medial propaganda, legal & military interferences, governing appeasements (like tax rebates & federal interest lowering, imminent domain BS, etc.)…it’s called “Human Management”…and that’s the main focus of any government…Just what will People take before their power is at stake, and how much power can be gained in the mean time.

Feel a bit like a lab rat right about now??? lol World economy is based on those stats…you don’t imagine that America is the only lab, do you???

Good Journey!!! It’s really quite interesting…to say the least!!!

Well, if you started riots at gas stations, then the price would more than likely go up again, considering the fuel would be in danger. Kind of like when terrorists strike oil fields. There really is nothing we as a society can do about it. We are too small as a person and to weak as a voice. The sad truth is that gas prices will continue to go up as long as we deal with the dollar. The US dollar’s value is very weak compared to the Euro and other countries currencies. The US government buys oil from foreign lands using the dollar. Since the dollar has very little value, it takes more dollars from the USA in order to pay for oil.

For example: Europe buys oil from the Saudis at 100 euros a barrel.
US buys it for 150 dollars for the same amount.

There is absolutely nothing we can do to stop the prices. Gas prices will continue to climb and will never, ever stop until we change the value of our dollar, or switch to the euro. And, when i mean it will never stop, i mean never. At this rate we (USA) will definitely see 7-9 dollars a gallon in the near future. So far it has been a dollar more a gallon, ever year….do the math.

FYI…..We depend on Foreign oil so much, if the Saudis and the other nations we do business with, wanted to stop taking our dollar and switch to euros, the US government would do it at a moments notice. Pretty sad.

Well, even though a gas station riot sounds fun, It’s known that there’s lots of gas, oil etc. in Alaska, I’ve heard the environmentalists won’t let us drill there. They say it will LOOK bad. Can you believe that? I’d say we need to come up with a petition to drill in Alaska. They even invented electric cars 100 years ago, but the oil companies won’t let us know about that. I’d say gas station riots need to start. Bikes need to come out of the shed. I’ve heard someone else talk about gas station riots, and they even got thumbs down!

  • Jim L:

Well, since the gas station owners have nothing much to do with it, I don’t think riots will solve the problem. The problem is comes with the basic fundamental of supply & demand. The way the places that we live are laid out make driving an automobile inevitable. The problem is that it is unsustainable. Think 50 or 100 years from now. The price of gas may be slightly inflated now due to speculation, but our energy sources may ’soon’ be depleted. Therefore, we should focus on not only alternate energy, but rethinking the way our cities are planned and our transportation infrastructure and facilities. This will take some discipline on our part, since we have been spoiled by abundant land and 50 years of automobile-reliance, however, it is the step that we need to make.

we have already sent a message that gas prices are becoming a concern and we have been bringing up proposals and possible solutions. but the problem is that the public will not react in a severe way unless it gets to about 5 dollars maybe 6. It needs to be extreme. see if you walked out tomorrow and gas was 6 bucks ya there would be chaos. but gas companies set prices gradually so that we believe that its not getting to high. but its coming to a point were we have been blowing in and in into a balloon but its about to pop. yes we could riot but it wont do anything unless its for an extreme amount of time but we would give in. but some things are out of our hands. like airlines need gas to fly so we can travel. if they protest then will shut down so there deppendent on that gas. The best and most effective way to get rid of these high gas prices is to find a solution to get to work, buy groceries, and go to leisure places. We could ride bikes or even electric mopeds. i se opportunities out there but we as americans need to work together. the best way are golfcarts. yes it might seem wierd at first but you must think about it. you plug it in your garage to charge so your not using gas. yet you just can’t take it onto the streets. that’s the problem, if everyone just started driving electric golfcarts and mopeds on the street then gas problems would be solved but because it would take a slow progression it will never work. and the fact they don’t go that fast and for long distances.

car companies need to provide car that run on pure electricity. they have protypes but the fact that they aren’t putting them on the market makes them pointless. they need to make them available!
