What’s going on with gas prices starting tomorrow morning?
Matt ? asked:
My dad called me about an hour ago and he said that I need to fill up my cars immediately because gas prices are going up tomorrow. Well, to my surprise, every gas station around where I live is over crowded with people panicking to fill up their cars including me. What’s going on? I tried to find something on the internet about it, but I couldn’t. Could someone enlighten me about this situation?

This happened in Atlanta a year ago. People were scared gas was going to run out for some stupid reason. Of course stupid spreads like wild fire and there where hour long lines at the pump. Gas stations were charging $7 per gallon. A lot of gas stations did run out of gas. A few days later nothing happened and all those people looked like dumbasses.
According to MSNBC
“Gasoline prices jumped to unprecedented levels in the wholesale markets Thursday as Hurricane Ike tore across the Gulf of Mexico, threatening to strike Texas and its refineries.
Crude oil on the futures market, however, sank below $101 a barrel to its lowest settlement price since late March — a sign that investors are still worried about waning global demand.
The wholesale price of gasoline ranged from $4 to nearly $5 a gallon in the U.S. Gulf Coast throughout the day on Thursday, said Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst of the Oil Price Information Service in Wall, N.J.”
I heard this three times today, wonder if its really going up a dollar more a gallon.
I’m confused about the specifics too, but I’ll tell you all I know.
I began working at a Wendy’s connected to a gas station about two months ago. Anyways, one of the employees got a call from her mom, who had heard that there was a rumor going around that gas prices were going to jump. She asked my boss, the manager at Wendy’s, about it. He went across the street to the Petro to inquire. When he came back a few minutes later, he told us that he was closing the Wendy’s for a half an hour to give us all a chance to fill up before all heck broke loose. He explained that as of tommorow morning, the gas station was going to a) raise the price on gas to $5.25 a gallon, and b) ration the gas to 10 gallons per person. About an hour later, a CNN breaking news report came on that said gas prices were expected to jump, because many oil rigs were going to be shutting down in the gulf. Then people began swarming us. More than 100 cars backed up to the highway in the desperate attempt to get gas before the price spiked.
Now, I’m not sure if this is going to hit everyone in the country, but from what I can tell, you have until tommorow before the prices go up to $5.00.
when i went to work today the prices was $3.49. on my way home i saw prices from $3.89 to $5.20. no kidding. blame it on speculation i guess. you couldn’t even fit a mini cooper into the lots at the cheaper stations. the price of oil is steadily going down but it’s those refineries closing in the gulf in anticipation of ike.
EDIT: i just saw on my 11 oclock news that stations have run out of gas and that gas prices were most definately going up tomorrow. we’ll see who’s right tomorrow! i hope it’s not me! but anyway, gas should go down after ike blows over.
The hurricane is predicted to hit oil reserves in the gulf…..Everyone is out right now filling up because no one wants to pay $5.00 tomorrow (if it gets that high). 4 days ago I filled up for $3.65, this morning it was $3.75, and now my boss just called and said just hours later they changed it AGAIN to $3.99.
The increase is due to partly due worries about the hurricane, and because supposedly they have closed down some of the places that manufacture gas in the hurricane area for safety reasons.. BUT more importantly, the increase is because people who are afraid of the prices going up, are running to the gas stations to fill up before the prices escalate. In turn the higher demand drains the available supplies prematurely.. This action give the gas stations a good excuse to raise their prices well above what makes logical sense. Think about it .. Why Should I charge you a dollar for a Candy Bar if you or someone else is willing to give me $5.00 for that same Candy Bar. PLEASE EVERYONE, I URGE YOU, Don’t fall for the ploy.. DON’T BUY The Gas at the HIGHEST PRICED STATIONS, and if you must buy gas, BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED to get you through.. This is too much like the Stock Market Crash and the Runs on the Banks during the 20’s.. We are only hurting ourselves here folks.. OIL is selling for around $101 dollars a barrel now.. Gas should not be $5.00 a gallon..
