I have been wondering the same thing. I want to buy an old mustang, t-bird or cougar. And, I was hoping the market for new cars being bad, and the low gas mileage on good Fords and Mercurys from the late 60's and early 70's would bring the price down.

I really dont care about gas mileage. I would probably only drive it a 1,000 miles a year at the most. I live in MN, and trust me, the thing would garaged from October until May.

sadly, classic car prices have nothing to do with gas prices. they have become an investment tool for the very wealthy. from what I've heard it involves some sort of tax dodge. this has resulted in ridiculous prices making them out of reach for the common man. my suggestion is if you find something affordable and restoreable, buy it now and restore it when you can afford to. that, or look for something old that hasn't become popular yet. last year i bought a '71 Gremlin for $500 and now i'm seeing them for 10 times that. my son and i plan to restore it this year.

My classic muscle car had a pro-engine matched with pro-transmission and drive line, I have to run racing fuel that is now closing in on $15 a gallon and it gets 4 mile per gallon. I'm NOT selling it, I drive it once a week and will pay $20 a gallon if I have too!

Your talking about the haves and the have nots. As long as people have more than they need, they will continue to spend it on things that they don't need. The prices will fluctuate up and down but there will always be the guy or gal that wants something special that no one else has. If you have the spare cash and would enjoy this type of project, I'd say have at it. You only live once and regret is a life long hobby, don't regret that you could have and didn't.

I wouldnt think so, classic muscle cars are for real auto enthusiasts. the price should not be affected by fuel prices unless you intend it to be a daily driver.then there are all sorts of options to get better fuel mileage....just something to think about.

Nobody buys a classic to drive to and from work.
anyone with the money to buy a classic car could probably care less about the price of gas.

I'd expect prices to hold steady here where I live. Supply goes down over time as these cars become rarer. There are plenty of people with large disposable incomes here on the central coast of California. In more economically depressed areas, if there are no buyers then I'd say prices could go down.

Classics aren't meant to be daily drivers, so no, gas prices aren't really a factor.

Actually, a "classic car" or true "muscle car" price will not go down.

They've already gone down. It's not really worth it anymore unless you can find a buyer for your old classic. I understand it's pretty cool to restore one because I've done it. But honestly those days are fading. Best of luck to you!
